2 Wolves and a Funeral
Aug 12, 2017And during times of sadness, we feel that it is often much more difficult to keep our ‘cool’, to be polite and thoughtful, and to be forgiving. Human interactions can become rather ugly sometimes, and our emotions are often elevated.
So, without naming our friends and family, you could imagine, like you saw in the movies, how people often fight over the smallest thing, like a silver serving spoon that’s been with the family for years. Or people that brought up old, unresolved issues and started fighting all over again.
Watching all these drama over the past few weeks actually reminded me of an old Cherokee legend. And it goes like this:
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life.
“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.
One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “Whichever one you feed.”
It is a simple story, but it is really quite profound. None of us are pure angels or 100% evil. We all have our good qualities and our dark sides. Whichever side we decide to feed is what we will end up being. The good wolf or the bad wolf.
If you keep feeding yourself negative news, greed, regret, and all the ugly stuff, feeling sorry for yourself, then you become the bad wolf.
On the other hand, if you chose to live well, stay healthy, be happy, forgiving, also see the glass as being half full, you become the good wolf. It doesn’t have anything to do with your family background or your genes your family your friends. It is all within you.
So, today, decide whether you want to be the good wolf, or the bad wolf. And start feeding yourself the right way.
