4 ways to optimize your GUT (Part 2) - Microbiomes and our Health

Sep 12, 2018

What the heck are microbiomes?

Is it one of those crazy health fads that everyone will talk about for a while and then will go away? Or is it actually important for you to know?

This week, we are pulling excerpts from our free downloadable e-book 'Gut Matters' that is available now and you can get your own copy. I am Minna from the Foolish Couple. We believe that healthy relationships start with health and our goal at Foco Academy is to help people achieve true health and healthy relationships by nutrition, exercises, mindset and lifestyle.

Yesterday we talked a little bit about what exactly is your GUT and we also talked about the connection between your gut and your brain. If you missed the episode, here's the link to access it. We feel that it is important for you to understand your gut because, as Hippocrates said way back in 370BC,

“All disease begins in the gut”

And that statement is even more true today then back then because, other than certain genetic diseases, there is now evidence that many chronic diseases do, in fact, begin in the gut.

So today we’ll talk about microbiomes. You may have heard about microbiomes in some health articles or nutrition materials, but do you really know what it is?

Microbiomes, in simple words, is a community of trillions of microbes, also called the microbiota. Microbes are tiny organisms that work hard to keep your bodily systems healthy and they manufacture signals that determine our mood, our memory, and our brain health. It is kind of like the trillions of tiny electrical signals that runs through the electrical wires into the traffic lights that sends signals to the drivers telling them whether it is red, yellow, or green.

We used to think that microbiota was the cause of disease. It wasn’t until 2008 that we’re starting to understand that our microbiome is working for you, rather than against you.

Taking a paragraph out of chapter 2 from the book Gut Matters:

today, we are all too familiar with the use of hand sanitizers and antibacterial soaps that kill all bacteria – the good, the bad and the beautiful. This phenomenon combined with the Standard American Diet, laden with foods that are mostly void of nutrition, is causing an imbalance in healthy gut function and the loss of integrity of the gut wall called gut permeability.

According to Doctor Kellman, when your microbiome goes out of balance you risk such symptoms as brain fog, depression, anxiety, skin issues, insomnia, obesity, diabetes, and cancer. In a study done by UCLA, they also found that probiotics, which is a beneficial bacteria, altered the brain function in the participants.

Which means, that the health of your microbiomes, which is the bacteria in your GUT, is not only related to stomach problems. It actually affects your entire body including your brain functions.

We have posted a picture of 10 things about your microbiome that is important for you to know and you can also download the complete ebook from our link below.

But let us just stress that maintaining a healthy microbiome with an anti-inflammatory lifestyle should be considered front and center in your quest for true health. So in the following episodes, we will talk about the various gut problems including inflammation and leaky gut, and the ways to optimize your digestion.
