The Matrix - Personal Development 101, Part 1

[We are the Foolish Couple, Andy and Minna, founders of the Foco Academy. We focus on mentoring and teaching the Success Principles and how to apply the principles to the 3 areas of life that money can’t buy: Health, Time, and Love Relationship.]

One of my favorite movies of all time is the Matrix, Part 1. Not only because Keanu Reeves is in it. It is part of the reason, of course, but also because of the revolutionary idea of the story and the transformation of the hero in the story.

Every good story has these components. The hero, who is usually the main character, the problem, the guide, the love interest, the villain and the success. The hero was always pathetic when they started. Neo started off as a moonlighting hacker. But with the guide, Morpheus, who trained and led Neo through the transformation. The love from Trinity was boundless and always supportive. With the guide and love, Neo was able to morph into ‘The One’ and finally defeat the villain, Mr. Smith, to success.

There are 2 things in the Matrix that is very relatable when it comes to your life.

About the matrix. The matrix is a computer program where every person is programmed. Aren’t we all being programmed? Ever since we were toddlers, we were told what to do, what not to do. Eat this, don’t eat that. Play with this, don’t play with that. Don’t hang out with those kids. Our lives are generally programmed to go to school, get a job, get married, buy a house, make some kids, and get old. We were told that your health is all about genetics, that it runs in the family, it’s in your genes. It is inevitable that you get old and frail.

All these beliefs were programmed into us. Yet, we can choose to exit the program, if you choose to.

In the beginning, when Neo (the hero) first met Morpheus (the guide), he was given a choice: the red pill or the blue pill.

If he takes the blue pill, then it would be as if nothing has happened. Life goes on as usual.

However, if he takes the red pill, everything changes. The red pill opened his eyes to greater possibilities, made him understand what was programmed into him.

Isn’t your life the same way? At some point, you’ll realize that choosing the blue pill isn’t going to get you to where you want to be. Sure, your life is OK. Your finances are OK, your career is OK, your love relationship is OK, your health is OK. However, at some point, everything goes downhill.

That’s where we were 7 years ago. We were doing OK. We make a decent living, enough to get by, our careers are doing OK, our love relationship is OK, our family is doing OK, our friends are OK, our bodies have aches and pains but it’s OK.

Everything is OK. Nothing is Great.

At some point, because we were not developing ourselves, things kept going downhill. Our bodies were broken down, our finances got really bad, our relationship was going nowhere, and our family were more annoying than ever.

So there’s the choice. The blue pill, or the red pill. If we chose the blue pill, we remained status quo, and they way we see it, things can only get worse. If we chose the red pill, our world would change forever. We would never see the world the same way again. We’d see the truth.

We chose the red pill.

By choosing the red pill, we decided to take on the path of personal development. In the beginning, things were tough. It is like when you first learned to walk. You fall a lot, but you get up, and you try again. Eventually, things gets easier. And our lives are changed forever.

How about you? Are you satisfied with your life? Are you happy where you are with your health, your relationships, your situation, your life? Will you choose the blue pill, or are you ready to choose the red pill?

Should you decide to go with the red pill, we’re here for you. We can be your Morpheus and guide you through your transformation. But first, here’s an action for you. Think about your life. Good or bad. Think of the programming that people has done on you. They may be your parents, your teacher, your friends, or even people from the media. What kind of programing is it? Does it serve you, or does it serve against you? Is it anchoring you from moving forward? Or is it an engine driving you forward? Tell us in the comments below.
