Welcome to Foolish Insights. We are the Foolish Couple, Andrew and Minna, nutrition coaches and success mentors. We created FoCo Academy to guide and mentor people to achieve true health and healthy relationships through nutrition, exercise, mindset and lifestyle changes.

Last time we talked about water fasting, and when I tell people that I am doing a water fast, the most common response is that we’re doing it to lose weight.

If you missed our last episode, here's the link to it:

They are so wrong.

There are a ton of different ways to lose weight, and to be honest, that was not our goal at all.

Sure, losing weight is good, but we’re ok keeping our current weight. I think the best way to explain is to give you an analogy.

Over the last few years many car manufacturers came out with new hybrid vehicles. A hybrid vehicle is a car that can run on both electricity and gas. The car can run on clean, efficient energy which is electricity, or it can also run on dirty fuel which is gas.

Your body works the same way. Your body is made up of a lot of little cells, and each cell has a little battery called the mitochondria. This battery can be charged by either carbohydrates, which is the dirty gas, or it can run on healthy fats, like a car that is running on clean electricity.

(Minna) For me, my body used to be very dependent on carbohydrates, and my body does not know how to run on healthy fats. I want to change that. I want to train my body to have the flexibility to burn either carbohydrates or fats, and water fasting is one way to reset my body so that my body can learn to burn fats again.

So if your body is dependent on carbohydrates, you will have a miserable time going on a water fast. And if you really want to go on a water fast, next time we will tell you how to prepare for it to make the process a little bit easier and smoother.

We decided to water fast for 5 days, and there are some scientific reasons as to why we chose 5 days but you can of course decide on what works best for you. The longest documented water fast lasted 382 days back in the 70’s. Over the 382 days he went from 456 lbs to 180 lbs! We know we won’t die in 5 days, nor do we have that much weight to lose!

Basically, here’s what you can expect.

On day 1, make sure you drink a lot of water. Drinking water will keep you feeling satiated and starts the detoxification process. You will feel hungry at times, but hunger comes and goes. You may also notice that your top of your tongue turned white.

Day 2 and 3 is probably the hardest. Make sure you drink a lot of water.

Usually, by day 3, your body will tell you that it is thirsty and you will naturally learn to drink more water.

You may also notice that your complexion will turn worse. This is your body’s way of releasing toxins through your skin, so just bear with it.

For the first 3 days, try not to exercise. You may feel nauseous, weak, and tired. That’s natural.

By day 4 of your water fast, you will feel like a whole new person. It’s like a phoenix that rises up from the ashes and soar to new heights.(Tweet this)

By day 5, you are a brand new person. And by that time, hopefully, your body will be able to run like a hybrid engine.

For me (Minna), this actually worked out to be the best time to water fast because I was actually alone, I just needed to clear my calendar so that I had no social obligations and I didn’t have any sports activities scheduled.

During the days that you fast, definitely don’t watch anything on Food Network. Looking at food, smelling food, talking about food will make it that much harder for you. I still did light exercises like walking and yoga. I also meditated, and I kept myself busy so that I won’t think about food.

Next time, we will elaborate on how to prepare for the water fast and how to make it a little easier.

Till Next Time Love what you live and live what you love.
