CHL - Bio-Hacking Tip 69- Are You Statin’ With the Wrong Lipid Test?
Jul 27, 2024Welcome back to our Inflammo-geddon Bio-hacking series! I'm Andy, here with a quick disclaimer: we're not doctors, and everything we share is our opinion only. Always stick with your prescribed meds and check with your doctor before making any lifestyle changes.
Today, we're diving into lipid profile tests, those tests for total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL. Did you know 50% of Americans have what's considered elevated cholesterol, often leading to statin prescriptions? But not everyone needs statins.
The standard lipid profile test is outdated and doesn't give the full picture. It’s not just about the total number but the particle number and size. You need to know if your cholesterol particles are large and fluffy or small and dense. Smaller particles are riskier because they’re more likely caused by oxidation, leading to plaque build-up in your arteries.
A Harvard study, the Jupiter Study, found that high LDL without inflammation is low risk, inflammation with okay cholesterol is regular risk, and high cholesterol with high inflammation is the highest risk. It's all about oxidation and inflammation.
Two companies offer advanced lipid particle tests: LabCorp’s NMR test and Quest Labs’ Cardio IQ test. Next time you get your lipids tested, ask for one of these to check if you have large, fluffy LDL or the small, oxidized kind before starting statins. That's it for today! Keep those particles large and fluffy, and stay inflamm-free! Catch you next time!
