Defining your New Normal 16 - Chasing Shiny Objects

#clarity #goals #healthlifestyle #money #personalgrowth #relationships #success #wellbeing Dec 24, 2021

Hi. I’m Minna, co-founders of Foco Academy, functional health and wellness coaches. As the world starts to wake up to the new normal, a lot has changed so we are also tweaking the focus of our messaging on how to get ahead in this new environmental, this new world. We are still focusing on time, health, and relationships and we are still utilizing the same set of success principles.

During Christmas many cities have some type of Christmas light displays. We recently went to a big outdoor light show in Houston Raceway and it was spectacular. Everything is shiny and pretty and nice and we had a lot of fun.

While we're walking through the displays, every time I walk up close to a display, I can't help but notice another shiny pretty display elsewhere.

Which brings me to my point, we’ve all suffered from Shiny Object syndrome.

It's like when I play with Elsa my cat, she would chase this little laser beam all over the house.

While it is ok to walk through to admire shiny objects in a light show, it is not OK to have shiny objects syndrome in your normal life.

Dr Amen says this:

Often when something is fun, exciting, and new, we get a temporary hit of dopamine which makes us feel good and motivates us to want and seek more.

Dr Amen gives you the scientific explanation of how dopamine flows through our system.

But I just want to tell you this, you may have shiny object syndrome in your life, in your work, maybe even in your love life.

This new thing always seem better and more fun and exciting, but it is hurting your focus, decreasing your productivity, leaving you bored and unsatisfied, elevating your stress level and draining your resources.

Chasing the latest and greatest shiny object will leave you unfulfilled and unhappy.

But wait, how can you avoid it? Well, I cannot train my cat to ignore the laser beam because cats are purely instinctual.

But you are a person. And you can choose to control yourself. All you really need to do is, elevate your awareness so that when you catch yourself chasing the laser beam, just pause, take a deep breath, and go back to what you are doing.

With practice, this will become second nature to you. And you will find yourself happier, more fulfilled, and less stressed. You will also be able to focus better at work and in life, meaning that your life will become better.
