For our blog this week, we're going to cover a variety of topics focused on one important part of your body: your Brain.

If you have watched our free training series "Time for Health" then you’d know that the Brain is the first thing that we talked about in our BARS system. If you have not watched it we strongly suggest that you follow the link here and get access to our video series. It is 100% free and it is full of health information and actionable steps that you can take so that you can become healthier.

Now to kick off our Brain series, let’s first talk about the universal debate between the sexes.

Who’s smarter? Men or women?

Well, it’s hard for us to say whether men or women are smarter. After all, smart is a relative term. There are people who have very high IQ but appear to be very stupid in their daily lives.

And most of the most successful people that we know of actually only have average IQ. So it is really hard to relate IQ to success.

Richard Branson, for instance, is dyslexic and does not appear to be super smart at all. However, he has some extraordinary interpersonal skills and a vision that brought him to his success.

So we’re not really going to say which sex is smarter. But we do have some reference as to who has a more active brain.

Who do you think have more active brains? Women or men?

Men, of course. Right?

There is a report released by the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, based on the largest functional brain imaging study done to this day, comparing over 46000 brain SPECT images.

The goal of this study is to understand gender-based brain differences because the quantifiable differences between men and women are important for understanding gender-based risk for brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

And, the results, is that the brains of women in the study were significantly more active in many more areas of the brain than men, especially in the prefrontal cortex, which is involved with focus and impulse control, and the limbic or emotional areas of the brain, involved with mood and anxiety. The visual and coordination centers of the brain were more active in men.

Having a more active brain doesn’t mean women are smarter. But understanding these differences is important because brain disorders affect men and women differently.

Women tend to have significantly higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease, depression, which is itself is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, and anxiety disorders, while men have higher rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (also known as ADHD), conduct-related problems, and incarceration (by 1,400%).

The study also finds that women have higher prefrontal cortex blood flow compared to men. This may explain why women tend to be more empathetic, they are also stronger in terms of intuition, collaboration, and self-control.

The study also found increased blood flow in limbic areas of the brains of women, which may also partially explain why women are more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, insomnia, and eating disorders.

Interesting right?
