Hello. Welcome to Foolish Insights. We are the Foolish Couple, Andrew and Minna, nutrition coaches and success mentors. We created FoCo Academy to teach and mentor people like you to achieve true health and healthy relationships through nutrition, exercise, mindset and lifestyle changes.

Continuing on with our Brain series, Today’s topic is Yoga for Bigger Brains.

 How big is your brain?

With scientific breakthroughs in brain science, we now know that humans have the power to increase their brain size. And this can change your life in so many ways, such as increased memory.

For example, we enjoy doing yoga, and the older we get, the more we feel the need to keep up with yoga. Yoga helps us with our flexibility, it stretches our muscles after a cardio workout or strength training, and it also calms our minds.

Yoga combines breathing, holding postures and meditation, a trifecta that not only protects the integrity of your brain, but thickens layers of your cerebral cortex, too.

Brain scans now reveal that yoga changes your brain chemistry in positive ways. It helps build more robust levels of gray matter in brain areas involved with pain modulation.

A 2015 study by McGill University and the National Institutes of Health also found that consistently doing yoga may be associated with positive changes in the left hemisphere, including increasing gray matter volumes in clusters located in the parts of the brain that helps with:

  • Perception
  • Motor control
  • Self-awareness
  • Cognitive functioning
  • Interpersonal experience
  • Inhibition
  • Impulse control
  • Social behavior
  • Memory processing
  • Emotion and rewarding decision making

Some other ways that may increase the size of your brain are

Juggling – Juggling is not just about hand eye coordination. Juggling also increases the size of your brain’s grey matter and also enhances cellular connections.

Meditation – We know that meditation helps calms our minds, and we have recommended meditation in several other blogs before because it helps clear your minds, and meditation is also essential in achieving your dreams and goals. But apparently, meditation also structurally changes the areas of your brain involved with memory, compassion, and stress.

Omega- 3 oils - In a 2014 study published by Neurology, having healthy omega-3 fatty acids circulating in the body is linked to bigger brains. You can get omega-3 from fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, but experts also recommend getting a high-quality Omega-3 supplementation. We stress the ‘high quality’ here because low-quality fish oil has been linked to certain types of cancer. If you are wondering where to get high quality supplements, follow our link here for our favorite high quality omega-3 supplement. This one guarantees purity, potency, and absorbability.

Older adults can also increase brain volume in the regions that are linked to age-related brain structure and function decline. In a 2006 study, they found that regular aerobic exercise significantly increases both gray and white matter regions of the brain.

Intermittent Fasting is known to reduce brain fog in women. If you are fasting properly, it can increase your energy level, make you less insulin resistant, improve immunity, lower your diabetic risk, improve heart health, and also increase the production of a brain neurotropic growth factor which is a protein that promotes neuron growth and protection. This makes us more resilient to neurological stress and also helps stave off neurodegenerative diseases.

**We have a blog on intermittent fasting here so make sure you check it out if you have not seen it.

And if you are worried about getting neurodegenerative diseases or other types of degenerative diseases, we have a training video series that is completely free, and gives you a lot of information and action steps on how you can prevent getting any kinds of degenerative diseases. So check it out here.

Next time, we’re going to talk about your 2 brains.
