Welcome to Foolish Insights. We are the Foolish Couple, Andy and Minna, nutrition coaches and success mentors. We created  the FoCo Academy  to guide  and  mentor people to achieve true health and healthy  relationships through nutrition, exercise, mindset and lifestyle changes.

So far this week we have been talking about a few myths on health. We’ve talked about how a 60 year old actually has the same capacity to build muscle mass as a 30 year old, but only if they have the same levels of nutrition and they do muscle building exercises.

We also confirmed the fact that you really don’t need to eat everyday, 3 meals a day. Both of us has done extended fast for 5 days and not only did we survive, our bodies actually came out thriving as a new fat-burning machine. Yesterday we explained how saturated fat is not bad for you but is actually essential for your good health, but highly processed foods are the real culprits behind a lot of chronic diseases.

Today, let’s talk about the belief that medication can heal everything. It is amazing how many people don’t take care of their health because they believe that there are some type of pill or medical procedure that can fix them if they get a chronic disease.

And doctors are very good at prescribing medication right? If you have high bad cholesterol, they prescribe you Statins to keep your cholesterol from getting even higher. If you have high blood pressure, there are ACE inhibitors for that. If you have type 2 diabetes, your doctor will probably start you off with Metformin, which reduces the amount of sugar that your liver makes, decrease the amount of sugar your body absorbs and increases the effect of insulin on your body.

However, most diabetics will most likely eventually require insulin Injections when their body becomes incapable of making enough Insulin. But are these medications and injections really a solution for your health problems?

Really think about it. These things that your doctor prescribe for you is like giving you a band aid to stop the bleeding. But is it truly curing you? Is that pill going to lower your cholesterol? Your blood pressure? Your blood sugar levels? NO! These medications will no doubt help you live longer, however they won’t help you live healthier, or happier. Your body will continue to break down slowly over time.

So what is the real cost of your illness? It’s not the doctor’s visits, the health insurance, or the cost of the medication.

It is costing you a whole lot of time and freedom.

Having chronic diseases means you cannot pursue life to the fullest.

When you go for a hike, you get tired easily. When you want to help out with house chores, you have no energy to do anything. You may want to pick up your grandchildren and play with them but, forget it, your body is in too much pain to do that.

According to the World Health Organization, a quarter of the world’s population is not active enough to stay healthy! That means there are around 1.4 billion adults that are not physically active enough to stay healthy!

One in three women and one in four men are sitting in front of a TV, sitting at their desk or in their car more than they are exercising. That means that these people are at greater risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia and cancer.

In the United States, 48% of women and 32% of men are not sufficiently active. The WHO recommends a minimum activity of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity a week.

Do you exercise that much a week or are you 1 of the 1.4 billion that is probably going to get some type of chronic disease in your future? We have included a link on that article that you may want to read up on.

Some of you may be thinking that you’re ok with just taking medication and living a long life, even though you have a chronic illness. Because it is so easy to do.

Just take the pill and you’re done. It’s much easier than eating healthy and exercising. No doubt.

But, hold on, even though you may live to be a ripe old age, if you have a lot of underlying medical conditions you will probably need to live in an assisted living facility. You think that you would be ok, being taken cared of for the rest of your life by the facility. But NOOOO!

Across the country, assisted living facilities are evicting residents who have grown older and became too frail for them to take care of. They are essentially saying you need too much care and they can’t take care of you any longer.

Check out the article happening right here locally in the Bay area.

Then what? They send you home, and you become a burden to your family if they are nice enough to even take you in. Do you want your kids, your grand kids to be burdened with your expensive medical bills, and imagine how much time they would need to take from their lives to take care of you. All because you were just too lazy to take care of your health when you were younger?

No matter how old you think you are, It is never too late to start taking actions to become healthier. These days, it is not uncommon to live to 100 and beyond. Whether you want to live that long in pain and suffering, or to live a life full of fun, love and fulfillment, that’s up to you.

Take responsibility of your own health and live life on your terms, not on somebody else’s. To be healthy isn’t just about your body. It is about your life, and the life of your family as well.
