Welcome back to the Foolish Review. I am Andy, and I have just celebrated my 49th birthday last week and for many of us, birthday is the time to review how our last year went and really get in touch with our inner selves.

For Minna, who also has the same birthday as me, we feel blessed that we feel younger and healthier than ever. If anything, not only do we not feel any older, we actually feel younger, we have more energy, our body shapes are a little more flattering, and our posture is also getting better.

And all that, comes with daily nutrition and the proper types of fitness routines. So if you want to stop feeling older every day, we have some tips for you.

Last time I talked about the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. Nowadays, people compete on how little sleep they get and I think that is going the wrong direction. In fact, to really track how well our sleep is, as our birthday presents, we both got ourselves an Oura ring which not only tracks how much we sleep, but also gives us a good idea of how well we actually slept. It also gives us a readiness score for working out.

Over the last year, probably the biggest change that we have made is in what we eat, and when we eat. It is so important to know what are the right foods to feed your body.

And I’m sure you know that feeding your body with potato chips and beer is not the right thing to do.

One of the things you can do, is to take a look at your plate before you eat. It should have the colors of the rainbow and I am not referring to Skittles or Gatorade. The natural colors of our whole foods means that they have different phytonutrients that our body really needs to stay healthy.

I know there is a lot of chatter out there about what to eat, and there are millions of diet plans out there that is completely confusing the market. But, the basic rule, is to eat whole, unprocessed foods, better if they are organic. Eating food in its natural form is the best way to get the nutrients out of the foods.

We all have busy lives, which is why fast food became so popular. Packaged foods are convenient, but we are trading our health for convenience. We are essentially betraying our own bodies because we want to save a few minutes.

And, of course, drink clean, simple water. Not the sugary type. Depending on your body weight, we should on average drink about 8 to 10 cups of water. Why? Our bodies are made up of 50-65% of water. When you are well hydrated, your skin also gets hydrated, flushing out the toxins and also keeps your skin looking fresh and vibrant. Just by drinking simple, clean water, which probably doesn’t cost you anything, you are taking a giant step towards preventing premature aging.

Last thing on foods. To keep our faces looking taut and fresh and full, collagen is the one thing that you must have. And collagen comes from Vitamin C. Vitamin C protect your cells from free radicals and as a result, repairs the signs of aging. Foods that contain high levels of Vitamin C includes oranges, tomatoes, red bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis and papayas. So you have a wide variety of choices.

If you, like most people, only eat 1 to 2 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, then we recommend that you supplement with a high quality Vitamin C. Now when I say high quality, I mean a brand that is trusted by professional athletes, no foreign substances, and tested to be highly bioavailable which means, that it is easy for your body to absorb.

So if you are interested, here’s one that we recommend to everybody and we also use daily.

One more tip, and it is about the non-negotiables. The non-negotiables include:

Processed sugars, smoking and drinking.

Processed sugars cause glycation to collagen and elastin in our skin. Essentially it is making these two proteins stiff and malformed, making them discolored, weak and less supple. And that causes aging on our face by giving us more wrinkles, bagginess and a loss of radiance.

Processed sugars aren’t just about desserts. It also includes the obvious junk foods and fast foods, and, more importantly, white bread, white pasta and white rice. These are the foods that causes us to age prematurely. Not only does it age our face, it also ages our body internally and causes all sorts of chronic pains and diseases.

The other non-negotiables are smoking. Cigarettes, cigars, vaping, you’ve got to give them all up. First of all, smoking does not make you look cool. On the contrary, whenever we see people smoking we deliberately walk all the way around them just to stay away from their toxic smoke.

Vaping is even worse than cigarettes because they are usually higher in nicotine content. Any type of nicotine use will cause your face to wrinkle up. And, get this. It’s not just your face that wrinkles. Your inner arms too!

Nicotine damages the collagen and elastin and cause narrowing of the blood vessels in your outermost layers of your skin, impairing blood flow to the skin. With less blood flow, your skin gets less oxygen and less nutrients resulting in more wrinkles and paler looking complexion.

The last non-negotiable is drinking. As a teenager I thought it was cool to show off how much alcohol I can drink without getting drunk. Of course, that was stupid of me, because alcohol is the #1 cause of liver damage.

Drinking 1 to 2 glasses of wine in a week is not too damaging, and the resveratrol in the wine do have some health benefits. However, if you drink more than 2 glasses in a sitting or more than 5 glasses a week, it will age you prematurely.

Drinking dehydrates your skin so much, that just one night of drinking can temporarily show wrinkles and fine lines the next morning. Too much alcohol also disrupts your sleep and alcoholic drinks also have a lot of empty calories that can promote weight gain. If you are a heavy drinker, it can cause irreversible skin damage.

Alcohol also causes blood vessels on the surface to dilate giving you that flushed look. However, over time, these capillaries can dilate to the point that they burst, creating visible red and purple veins across your face and cheeks. Rehydrating may give your face back some of the suppleness, but the broken vessels are not so easily repaired. If you find that you are needing laser treatments to improve your complexion of the reddish veins on your face, maybe you are drinking too much.

I think that’s enough for today.
